The Mara

The Mara

Although it has a family resemblance, the mara isn’t related to the rabbit. In

fact, it’s a close cousin of the guinea pig and, like the guinea pig, it communicates through many different high-pitched sounds and whistles. It’s one of the few mammals to mate for life. One of the pair keeps watch while the other eats.

Groups build a shared burrow that acts as a nursery for the offspring of up to ten different pairs.

In its natural habitat, the Mara is endangered

by a competitor imported from Europe: the rabbit.
