The demoiselle crane

The demoiselle crane

This is one of the most beautiful cranes, which is easily recognised by its light-grey plumage, its red eyes and the white feathering on its head. It is also one of the smallest cranes. During the nesting period they live in isolated couples. Only during migratory periods do they group together in vast colonies of several hundred birds. Contrary to pelicans, they fly with straight necks.

Did you know? The males take over the hatching period. Some have even been spotted faking injury to attract predators away from the nest.
