The Bison
The Bison
(Bison bison)
- Class: mammalia
- Order: artiodactyls
- Family: bovidae
- Status: lower threatened
- Life span : 30 years
- Characteristics: these are the most powerful American mammal. They roam and graze peacefully on the prairie except in the rutting season when the large males compete violently. Females weigh 600 – 700 kg and it is not unusual for males to weigh one tonne. Adults have a black coat and their calves which are born after a gestation period of 9 months are reddish brown.
- Anecdote: In 1880 an intensive hunt campaign has been organised reducing American bison population to 500 individuals. A rigorous management made it possible to return to a population of more than 500000 animals of which 95% are the property of private breeders.
